Major improvement works have recently been undertaken at Kendal Castle Hill where we have worked closely with SLDC undertaking landscape maintenance and various other improvements including the erection of new signs.
The site has now been accredited with a green heritage flag and SLDC have drawn up a five year management plan to make sure continuous improvements are being made to enhance the area.
The main part of the hill apart from the castle was an agricultural tenancy for grazing up until 1994 when SLDC began to manage the site. The monument and hill were bought on the publics behalf by the then Kendal Borough Council in 1897. Since then a grass management regime has been adopted to promote wildflowers and biodiversity, and a mass planting of trees on the eastern and southern slopes has been undertaken. The tree planting was carried out with the assistance of local schools and Kendal Civic Society.
A dominating feature of the Kendal skyline, the castle is a well used visitor attraction, both for its history and as an excellent bracing walk with magnificent views of the surrounding fells.
Local people regularly use the hill for dog walking and kite flying and as an open play area. It also serves as a historical educational resource to local school and colleges who have been more active since the promotion of the site by Kendal Museum. There is an adjacent football and cricket pitch and a children's play area at the base of the southeast slopes.
