| Apart from cutting the grass, caring for trees and other regular activities Continental Landscapes Poole works on a number of varied projects. We are about to install a “round-a-boat”. When an abandoned fishing boat was found adrift in Christchurch Harbour, Poole Council arranged for it to be rescued and it will soon be the centrepiece of the Gateway to Poole roundabout, at the junction of the Holes Bay Road and the A35, after some serious refurbishment! The 20-foot long boat, Zulu, arrived at the Poole depot on the back of a lorry for the work to begin. Crabs were rescued from the boat first and then it was cleared of seaweed and other debris. The cabin needed to be dismantled as it had collapsed in the harbour and the boat has been renamed Dolphin – the symbol of Poole. Mike Parkinson of Poole explained: “It is a big project as the boat needs to be made safe and attractive before it can be placed on the roundabout.“ We have painted it to match the colours of Poole Council and Dolphin will be positioned on the roundabout surrounded by gravel and ornamental grasses. New nets attached to the gantry will help to make it a great focal point for the Gateway roundabout. People visiting Poole will immediately recognise and appreciate the importance of the fishing heritage of the town and such innovative landscaping is much more interesting than the usual roundabout features.” Dolphin, formerly Zulu, is almost 60 years old, completed on 26 January 1949, and will have a renaming ceremony in the depot before going to its new retirement home. The completed, refurbished boat has been placed on the roundabout complete with nets and lobster pots. |
