| Every Year around 250,000 people enjoy the many activities in Poole Park, visitors choose from 120 benches to sit on and admire the 40,000 bulbs and plants. Now Poole's premiere park has become a top open space able to fly the prestigious Green Flag, which recognises it as being among the best in the country. The town's Victorian park has joined Upton Country Park as the second in the Borough to win the prestigious award and a party was held to celebrate. "We are extremely proud", said Councillor Peter Adams, Poole Council cabinet's portfolio holder for Leisure. "The awards recognise the quality of our parks and the tireless work of everyone involved". 8 concessionaires, Continental Landscapes, who keeps the Park in trim, various clubs, whose members use the park, Councillors and members of the Friends of Poole Park gathered to mark the occasion. "It's long overdue", said Bob Lister of the Friends of Poole Park. "It's a great team effort. The public makes it what it is by visiting and using it." The park was full of people the day the judges arrived, with over 100 children enjoying the water sports and a Toddlethon around the cricket pitch. However, the Council does not intend to rest on its laurels. Clive Smith, head of Leisure Services said, "Hamworthy Park was next on the list. It's demanding, the judges want to see a long list of things. I think it's doable." Mike Parkinson, Senior Contract Manager for Continental Landscapes gave credit to the staff based in Poole Park for the achievement. "Without their hard work and perseverance, this would not have been possible. Thank you to all who have helped us to win the first Green Flag in the Park, in our first year in charge".
