On the North and South parks we retained our existing Green Flag Awards and added a further 4 for 2009/2010. The work adds a lot of pressure on management and the staff at a busy time of the year.

This year Pat's team in the South had the added pressure of completing the new Marble Arch bedding display and turfing. There is a lot of work involved getting a site up to Green Flag standard and maintaining those standards. Quite often we start a year before with the groundwork and improvements to the infrastructure of the park.

Paddington Street Gardens before the storm. Paddington Street Gardens

This year judging day in Paddington Street Gardens was at 9am on a Monday morning. Over the weekend a strong storm passed over, resulting in the heaviest fall of plane tree seed ever recorded. It even made the BBC news that night. The seed of the plane tree is fluffy, itchy, falls in vast quantities and is very irritating.

We worked over the weekend in an effort to clear the seed fall, and at 8 am on the day we were ready. But nature had one last blow, so that by the time the judges arrived the seed was lying an inch deep on the ground. Fortunately the storm continued so the judges could see at first hand what we were dealing with.
